The Village of Glen Carbon, established in 1892, is a community of approximately 12,500 citizens. As one of the first permanent settlements in Madison County, Glen Carbon is steeped in historical tradition and coal mining heritage. In 2009, CNN Money named Glen Carbon one of the top one-hundred places to live. Glen Carbon supports a large residential population, approximately 4,000 households, with a median household income of $55,840 (2000). Glen Carbon’s expanding commercial district includes a Walmart, Sam’s Club, Lowe’s, Best Buy, and several restaurants, as well as several parks with full access to the Madison County Trail System.
Glen Carbon firefighters engage directly in firefighting, fire prevention, and emergency medical service activities to protect and safeguard lives and property.
